Tell us about yourself.

It is one of those questions where when asked, you completely forget who you are. I am a procurement and warehouse supervisor by profession at Marine Service One with over 7 years of experience in the procurement field. I started working as soon as I turned eighteen. Life has been hard, but I believe I would not be where I am today without the struggles. I have learned to live life one moment at a time and things have worked well ever since.

What has been your most challenging or rewarding academic experience so far?

I believe the most rewarding experience has been the opportunities that unfolded after getting my bachelor’s degree. I had already been working while doing my undergraduate program, so I had a valuable experience but only lacked a degree. Fast forward to 3 years after starting my bachelor’s program, I was promoted to the role of a senior purchaser. The journey since then has only been going onward and upward..

How did you manage your Study-Work-Life balance?

It was challenging, but with the classes being after work hours and only 2 days a week, it was comparatively much easier to get an education while working. Since most of the learning was based on real-life case studies, Westford is the perfect choice for education, especially for working people.

What specific abilities would you like to hone to achieve your career progression?

As far as my skills go, I am on the right track to becoming a procurement manager. However, I am looking to improve my knowledge in the supply chain field and also work on my leadership skills. With the ever-changing market, I would like to get a certified professional license in Supply Chain Management and attend soft skills training to get better at managing people and being a good leader.

What would you advise to students in learning through their Study phase

My advice would be “Don’t overthink, just keep doing what you’re doing.” Life seems challenging and we will always think, “Maybe now is not the right time,” but the right time will never come. A few years from now, it is better to think that you have done what you wanted to do, rather than wishing you did it.

Tell us about yourself.

I work for the Kenya Revenue Authority as a customs and border control officer and am also a recording artist and performer. My role as a customs officer is to verify that goods entering the country are legal. Additionally, I work to prevent illegal and dangerous imports like drugs and firearms from entering our country. I completed my BA (Hons) in Business with International Business at Westford University in conjunction with Liverpool John Moores University, UK.

Why are/were you interested in the program you are pursuing?

My dual career led me to choose a program that would improve my performance in music as well as prepare me for a world career. My choice of the program came down to international business management out of the few I was considering. Due to my interest in working across borders and the fact that the international business world is rapidly expanding, I thought it vital to understand how businesses are conducted within a global context.

How do you plan to use education to support your career?

A person’s ability to learn makes him or her a valuable asset in any organization. I plan to use education as an essential step in expanding my practical skills and staying competitive. This way, I will be able to enjoy my work while at the same time improving the quality of the work.

How did you manage your Study-Work-Life balance?

Juggling employment and education takes a lot of dedication and discipline. I needed to plan to maintain a decent study-work-life balance. First, I spoke with my boss, who enthusiastically agreed to assist me to balance my working hours to accommodate my studies. Then I had to jot down all of my duties in a little journal as my guide in tracking assignments and completing them on time.

What would you advise students in learning through their Study phase?

By enrolling in a program, students have already taken the first step toward learning. They must work smart to achieve success and positive results. Students should always remember when they are starting school, that they are there for a reason and a season. There is time for everything and learning time should be dedicated to learning. Students should avoid distraction from unnecessary entertainment during this phase. The saying, “Any distraction is destruction”, applies to social media and timewasters. Last but not least, students should create a study plan that helps to organize their calendars to avoid last-minute deadlines for assignment submissions.

Tell us about yourself

As a child, I was raised in a typical desi household with Pakistani and Islamic values in the UAE. Having grown up in a family that has been not too strict, but also not too soft, has ultimately shaped my character and outlook on life. I grew up watching channel 33 and space toon. It’s been 5 years since my first role as a KYC analyst at Emirates NBD, and I’m now a senior fraud analyst in the Retail Cards and Business Department.

Which classes did you find the most beneficial?

The classes in Strategic Management and Service Management were my absolute favourites, and the enthusiasm and energy of my teachers motivated me to work harder. In each class, our lecturer would assign us brainteasers as exercise, it was always fun to test our reasoning abilities.

How would you define leadership? d you find the most beneficial?

Leadership involves caring for staff, ensuring they have all the resources they need to perform their tasks, and supporting them as needed. To lead, one must have self-control and be able to utilize their finest qualities to lead others. A contentious phrase. In my employment, I’ve been led by myself with support to reach my goals, which makes me a leader of myself, but leading a group of well-meaning individuals is a different problem.

What specific skills would you wish to improve to advance in your career?

First and foremost, be adaptable. I’m a meticulous and watchful individual. I like to prepare ahead of time and always have backup plans for backup plans. Life is unpredictable because it is impossible to regulate. As a result, the only survival skill required is the ability to live in the present moment. I can adjust if I have the tools and time to consider things out, but abrupt changes throw me off balance. Second, in terms of digital technology, it is preferable to be adept in fundamental computer abilities such as Microsoft Excel and Word. This is especially useful while working remotely and waiting for IT to respond.

How did you manage your study work life balance?

As a result of the flexibility of the classes available in Westford from my colleagues at work, I chose the online evening classes, which fit well into my work and sleep schedules. It was very manageable since I had my weekends to myself and was able to catch up on my sleep. I was also able to have leisure time and pray during the study breaks in online classes. Aside from this, recorded classes were also an advantage. I would consider it a blessing in disguise. The recordings allowed me to go back and forth and catch up if I missed any important details.

Tell us about yourself

Professionally, I have 6+ years of industry experience in Banking and Renewable energy with an emphasis on Water treatment. I am passionate about actively striving for a better tomorrow and I believe the fundamentals of achieving this are through kindness and education. If I had to describe myself in 6 words, I would say I am Friendly, Versatile, Goal-driven, Target-oriented and an animal lover.

How did you manage a Study-Work-Life balance?

Being realistic and practical, I need to plan accordingly so I have time to do everything on my agenda. I lay out priorities and plan my activities accordingly to my set deadlines for work-related items and assignment submissions for the university. I prioritize assignments that are due in the short term but also allow myself enough time to complete my day-to-day tasks in time to avoid stress and last-minute work. To avoid procrastination, I tried to maintain momentum and ensure productivity, whilst also remembering that a day only has 24 hours and therefore, I need to do what is within my capabilities during an allocated number of hours in the day and then dedicate the rest to relax or unwind.

How would you define leadership

I believe a leader is someone with the ability to inspire hope during trying times. Leaders fight for what is right despite the adversity’s life throws their way. They wake up in the morning intending to lead bravely, kindly, and passionately in the hope that one day they will be able to inspire someone else to look at life and see possibilities instead of hurdles.

Which recent global event has altered your perception of leadership? How?

The present crisis in my home country is a movement not led by one individual, but instead a cluster of young and old that knew what they deserved and would not settle for less. It was a movement led by patriotism and void of segregation between age, gender, class or religion. It was a united front – the most profound global event to witness because the people of my home, together, stood up for equality, justice and freedom.

What would you advise students in learning through their Study phase?

It is important, that everything is taken in slowly. Accept the fact that it is not easy to balance two aspects of your life at the same time. It is imperative one plans beforehand and makes time to go easy on themselves and yet not compromise on efficiency. It is difficult but not impossible and that belief will help one come a long way. My advice to students would be to always remember the negatives and yet emerge positive in every situation. It does get easier.
